SIRS- systemic inflammatory response occurs unrelated to an infection. so it would very much depend upon the situation of the record you are reviewing. if you suspect a systemic inflammatory response related to another condition (for example a trauma, burn etc.) and the patient also has a UTI a query for SIRS may be appropriate. Of course you need to assure you actually have clinical indicators to support the SIRS. If you feel the systemic response is related to the infection (UTI in this instance) if the clinical indicators support the presence of sepsis the a query for sepsis would be applied, but not for SIRS.
