how do I get CCDS without experience?
I would like to study and get my CCDS but what I have read is that I need experience working as a CDI for a couple of years. Last year I accepted a position for CDI and since then we have had some changes and leadership put it on the back burner. I currently assist HIM with scanning and other jobs they need help with until I am told what I will be doing. I am an RN, BSN, CNOR, RNFA who had to leave surgery department after 17 years due to my back. I have many years of family practice nurse and also on the med surg floor years ago.
We are a small, rural, critical access hospital. We do not get reimbursed based on the DRG system. Without this practice, how would I get certified? I have taken the CDI Apprenticeship, Clinical Documentation Integrity Boot Camp and Leadership in CDI all online last year and would like to move forward with my education, even if the hospital is not. Is there a different certification I can get without the specific training in the DRG system? Without a certification, I really doubt I would be able to get hired for a CDI position which is what I would like to do, plus learning how to code, until I retire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
